A sweet musing on the symbol hiding in plain sight.
The @ sign has been with us for centuries — first used by medieval monks as shorthand for the Latin word “ad,” meaning “at” or “toward.” Merchants borrowed it for trade. Then in 1971, engineer Ray Tomlinson needed a symbol to separate a person’s name from their computer’s location in the first email address. He scanned his keyboard and chose the forgotten @.
Just like that, a monk’s mark became the bridge between every human and the internet.
And here’s the quiet wonder: in ASCII, @ is decimal 64. In binary, 64 is 1000000. Every system reads it differently — but they all mean the same thing: @. At. Here. You.
